Make sure you have a fresh cover letter!

It is always disappointing to receive a job application without a Cover Letter. The truth is, hiring managers rarely have much time, they want information at their fingertips, so a good cover letter is vital to get you that all important interview. When you see a request for a Cover Letter, the recruiter is testing 3 things,

  • Have applicants read and understood the job advert?
  • Can applicants follow simple instructions?
  • Are applicants engaged and committed?
I always request cover letters and those who comply make it to the top of my shortlists. Those who don't bother, have to work MUCH harder to get my attention. A busy employer / recruiter can view your lack of cover letter as a lack of interest, or an inability to follow instruction, in essence without a Cover Letter your first impression is blown. You have a great  CV that you've worked hard to perfect, so don't ruin it with a lack of a cover letter!.

TIP: You don't need multiple versions of your CV if you tailor your cover letter to match each job you apply for.
TOP TIPS:
  • Write a fresh cover letter for each job application.
  • Ensure key details are correct (check the job title, the company name, the recruiters name etc.)
  • Highlight 3 of your best qualities for the job.
  • Give your cover letter personality. Your CV focuses on facts and figures, so be conversational in your cover letter, engage with the employer.
  • Keep it brief, ideally just a couple of short paragraphs. It should be an overview of who you are and why you are applying, not a second CV.
  • Check the details, then check them again. Spelling and grammatical errors often lead to snap judgements of your ability.
My advice is this; send a personalised cover letter with every job application, it demonstrates desire, effort and is a great way to make sure your CV is well received.

Good luck with the job hunting!
